Mid-Week Evening Walk - Yewbarrow |
On a lovely summers evening, Walter led 17 members on a walk from Witherslack church up and around Yewbarrow. On the way, we managed to see three buildings that used to be pubs, but no longer. As Mick said at the time, it was the driest pub crawl he had ever been on. Passing Walter and Anne's house, we called in to see the progress on the boat he was building. |

Mid-Week Walk - Red Screes via Scandale |
Five members looked another terrible forecast in the face, and joined Fred Underhill on his mid-week walk. Most arrived at Ambleside via bus, and all met up at the bus station there. With the morning surprisingly dry, Fred Underhill, Frank Haygarth, Mick and Clare Fox, Jan Lancaster, and Hugh Taylor headed up Sweden Bridge Lane and into Scandale, posing for a photo on the delightful High Sweden Bridge. Stopping for a brew by the sheep folds, a light drizzle teased us causing waterproofs to be put on and soon after taken off again. Reaching the col, and heading up the Red Screes slope, thunder reverberated around, and soon after the rain started in earnest. The wall afforded some shelter from the heaviest of the rain, and setting off again, the top was soon reached. With no visibility and too wet and windy to stop for lunch, we set off down the ridge. By the time we reached Snarker Pike, the rain had stopped, the clouds lifted, and the sun came out to reveal a superb view - definitely the (late) lunch stop. Arriving at Ambleside again, we were wishing we had brought sun cream as the sun was that strong. Tea and cakes in Daisy's cafe completed an excellent day out, with a surprisingly warm ending. Well done Fred. |
